This technically wouldn't be fishing because these fish were already caught for Market....and no hooks were necessary. But each of us had the chance to feel the wrath of the largest fish in the Amazon River. The arapaima are among the largest freshwater fish in the world, reaching lengths of as much as 15ft. Using a very thick wooden fishing rod with a good-sized fish (for bait) hanging from a noose at the end of the rope....we learned very quickly that these fish ain't gonna nibble one bit! Once the bait was dropped into the tank....hold on!
I seriously considered anchoring Jenesa to the fence so she wouldn't go flying into the tank with these huge fish....but she surprised me and gave me some good photo op's. Click! Click! Click!
The tongue of this fish is thought to have medicinal qualities in South America. It is dried and combined with guarana bark, which is grated and mixed into water. Doses of this are given to kill intestinal worms. The large bony scales can also be used as nail files (Jenesa just HAD to buy a few!).
